A Pint And A Chat

In 2017 a group of friends with a mutual love of endurance events walked into a pub in Horton-in-Ribblesdale and an idea was born.

There's something about the hum of conversation, the clinking of pint glasses, and the warmth of a good pub that fuels the imagination. Maybe it's the atmosphere—the collective energy of minds unwinding, stories spilling over tables, and grand ideas taking shape between rounds.

That’s exactly what happened one rainy evening in a cozy Yorkshire pub, as a group of friends, still buzzing from their latest adventure, came up with an idea that would soon take on a life of its own.

They had just completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks—Pen-y-ghent, Whernside, and Ingleborough—an iconic challenge that sees walkers traverse a grueling 24-mile route, climbing over 5,000 feet along the way. It’s a feat of endurance, a test of determination, and an experience that leaves its mark. But something was missing.

Unlike an organized race, where finishers are greeted with medals, certificates, and official recognition, the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge exists as a personal challenge. There’s no grand podium moment, no commemorative medal to hold up in victory—just the satisfaction of knowing you did it.

And that’s where the idea was born.

Between sips of locally brewed ale, they debated the possibilities. A certificate? A mug? A beautifully crafted map with space to mark the date of completion? Something tangible that could capture the spirit of the challenge and serve as proof of the experience—something to hold, admire, and perhaps even inspire others to take it on.

As the ideas flowed, so did the excitement. Before long, napkins were covered in sketches, thoughts bounced between them like sparks, and their vision started to crystallize.

It wasn’t just about creating memorabilia; it was about recognizing achievement, celebrating the journey, and turning a deeply personal challenge into something shared. After all, everyone who takes on the Three Peaks has a story. Whether they battle knee pain on the final ascent, push through exhaustion as the hours tick by, or power through with nothing but stubborn, hard-nosed grit, they earn that completion moment.

And soon, thanks to that night in the pub, they would have something to mark it.

What started as a casual chat over drinks had turned into a mission—one fueled by passion, love for the outdoors, and the desire to give fellow hikers a well-deserved nod of recognition.

So the next time you find yourself in a pub, beer in hand, and an idea bubbling in the back of your mind, don’t dismiss it. That casual conversation could turn into something much bigger—just like this one did.

If you've completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks then you've done the hard part - now it's time to let everyone know.
